The California State Legislature has officially adjourned its 2025 legislative session and will return to Sacramento in January 2026 for the second half of this two-year session. With next year being a campaign year for all members of the Assembly and half of the members of the Senate, legislators are sure to be working hard in their districts this interim in anticipation of such.
As previously reported, Governor Newsom and the Democratic Leadership succeeded in placing Proposition 50 on the ballot of this November’s special election. Proposition 50 would replace California’s current congressional maps with newly drawn maps. Most notably, the new maps were not created by the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission that was created in 2008 when voters passed the Voters FIRST Act.
Former-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was Governor and championed the Voters FIRST Act, has been vocally opposed to Proposition 50, urging Californians to reject the measure in November.
In addition to Proposition 50, the Governor, Legislative Leaders, and other stakeholders ultimately reached an agreement on the pending cap-and-trade extension. Below you will find further details on the final negotiations of that deal, updates on legislation of interest from this session, along with other relevant news and grant opportunities.
